A minister transcended that was important to my dad who had transcended five years before. I drove for two hours to be at the memorial service. I ask to share/ speak and was told “service speakers ” was completed and there wasn’t room but they would consider adding me. I gave the man an outline of what I wanted to say. He came back a short time later stating I could speak however I couldn’t set in the alter area. However, I could set in front row of the pews. I thought to myself, Good old boys grp. I sat in the front and when called upon spoke. I might add this American Baptist church which is a bit more liberal than Southern Baptist.

I suppose that my experience is not unique in that most churches/denominations are pretty tribal and cliquey. I have had that vibe at all the places of worship I visited for the first time. Everybody is kind of eyeing the stranger. It can be quite uncomfortable. That is what chased me away from the Christian faith and got me to Buddhism. Buddhists are more welcoming I found. When I attended service I would seek out new people and engage with them and then sit close during service so I could help them out with the intricacies of the liturgy. The chanting and kinhin (walking meditation) is tough to follow at first. When I see a stranger I try to see myself in them.
